Cultivated industrial hemp farm field.
Here at Tanasi, we are all about hemp plants: after all, they form the basis of all our CBD products. But this plant has a whole slew of other uses. And for that reason, we’d like to celebrate this little green miracle. But first, a note on hemp’s distinction: it is not a marijuana plant, although the two are closely related.
Here’s how they differ: hemp is taller than the marijuana plant. It is also much more hardy, making it able to thrive in many different locations and environments. This means that hemp products can be used without the fear of psychoactive reactions—or issues of legality. For those reasons and so many more, hemp products are cropping up in countless new arenas. Let’s take a closer look:
As an edible plant, one of hemp’s main uses is for food—for humans and animals. Hemp seeds make fantastic snacks on their own, or they can be crushed to create a hemp seed flour. In liquid form, the plant can be used to produce a lovely alternative to dairy milk. But, more than just being a tasty option, eating hemp-based products can add essential fatty and amino acids to your diet. In particular, the seeds are a great source of protein, iron, magnesium, and fiber.
And those nutrients aren’t just good for human consumption: they work for pets, as well, which is why hemp is often found in animal feed. From cats and dogs to farm animals and even birds, this power plant provides a major nutrient boost when consumed by any creature.
Oils from the hemp plant make for excellent body lotions, thanks to their EFA content (Essential Fatty Acids, which are excellent for moisturizing and healing dry, cracked skin.) Plus, because the hemp plant is non-comedogenic (it doesn’t clog your pores). It can be used comfortably without fear of triggering a breakout. We know many women who are using our 1200mg Tanasi Hemp Extract Lotion as part of their nightly routine on their face and neck!
Finally, hemp oil is a humectant, which means it’s especially good at drawing in and maintaining moisture levels deep within your cells. So, not only are hemp-based products great for moisturizing skin, but they can also provide effective treatments for dry scalp and dandruff issues.
Hemp oil can be used to create clean-burning candles, but it’s also a great basis for paint. And, since it’s non-toxic, unlike traditional solvent-based paints, hemp-based paints are great if you have environmental sensitivities. Bonus point: it’s better for the environment, too.
Now, about that environmental factor: the sustainable clothing market has embraced hemp fiber as the answer to its prayers. Designers such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and even Armani make use of hemp fiber in everything from jeans to high-end evening wear. It looks great and even helps make clothes more durable, so they last longer. That’s something everyone can get behind.
On the environmental front again, hemp is helping reduce the wasteful footprint of plastic and paper use. As it turns out, the hemp plant stalk can be used to forge a plastic that is biodegradable, non-toxic, and highly versatile.
Paper is another product that can be made from hemp, this time processing its fiber to produce eco-friendly, sustainable sheets. Making paper from hemp saves trees and forests. It also saves time, since the process is much faster than its traditional alternative. Basically, a win on all sides in both these categories.
Now that you see the breadth of power held within the mighty hemp plant, you’ll understand why we get so excited about each-and-every Tennessee-grown botanical used to supply our Tanasi products.
