A Comprehensive & Simplified Guide To Making CBD Oil

Have you ever wondered why most of the cannabinoid products you see on the market are oil-based? It’s for one simple reason: most of the beneficial and active cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants don’t mix well with water. Instead, chemical compounds such as THC and cannabidiol (CBD), which have both been praised for their immense potential health benefits, bond well with oil.

Of course, that’s not to suggest that you can’t enjoy CBD’s benefits in a water-soluble product. In fact, at Tanasi, we have perfected and patented innovative water-soluble CBD powders, all of which you can purchase in our online CBD store. Still, CBD oils are far more common. And learning about their production process can be a great way to truly understand this product!

Worried about the challenges of making your own CBD oil? We’re not going to lie: this isn’t the simplest process in the world. Still, the use and retail of hemp and CBD-infused products are now completely legal in the United States. So, if you have access to high-quality hemp flowers, this means that you can create your own CBD oil and even prepare CBD-infused products.

Want to hear the best part of this idea? CBD oil is an organic product, and by making it yourself, you will have peace of mind that there are no harmful additives used in the preparation process. Remember, not all manufacturers prepare high-quality and premium CBD products like we do here at Tanasi. Nor do they provide proof of contents, as Tanasi does with a certificate of analysis (COA) for every product we sell. Sadly, to make higher profits, some CBD oil manufacturers cut corners in the preparation process, exposing you to the risk of health complications. We use our Tanasi products too, and know and respect many of our peers and competitors as we try their products. Our understanding of why CBDA and CBD as a one-to-one formulation, and our patent-pending formula, have us trying and using hemp extract products often.

What Are The Main Ingredients Used to Prepare CBD Oil?

CBD oil is mostly prepared from the flowers of hemp plants or marijuana buds. When preparing cannabinoid oil, you should choose the primary ingredient based on your needs.

If you are looking for an oil concentrate that has little to no amounts of THC, and more cannabidiol, use hemp flowers. Remember that THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid compound that gives one a ‘high’. Hemp flowers only contain trace amounts of THC, meaning that they produce more potent CBD oil concentrate.

If you are looking for a full-spectrum oil with cannabidiol as well as a more concentrated level of THC, you can use cannabis buds. Marijuana contains high amounts of THC and other cannabinoids. We don’t work with marijuana plants or cannabis with a dry weight THC level greater than three-tenths of one percent (0.3%).

When choosing a primary ingredient for your CBD oil, you should also check to see if your ingredient is legal in your locality. There are only eight states that treat marijuana as an illegal substance, which means there are 42 states with some level of legal marijuana laws either decriminalized, or fully recreational. You do not want to run into trouble with authorities because you started experimenting with CBD oil. To check whether cannabis is legal in your locality, you can click on this link.

How Do You Prepare CBD Oil?

There are several ways to extract cannabinoids from cannabis and hemp plants. They include:

  • Use of Carbon Dioxide
  • Use of alcohol solvents
  • Use of oil

Some of these methods, such as the use of carbon dioxide, only work when you have sophisticated and expensive equipment. That means they’re best reserved for an industrial or commercial setting.

For the purposes of this article, however, we’ll focus on simple and inexpensive techniques you can apply to make CBD oil that you can handle by yourself.

DIY Recipes With Detailed Steps On How To Make CBD Oil At Home

Before attempting any of the recipes we outline below, you must ensure that you have well-preserved hemp flowers or cannabis buds. Ideally, the raw ingredients should have a high concentration of cannabinoid compounds. Focus on using organically grown plants that have not been exposed to any contaminants or unknown soil farmland. Remember that the more concentrated the cannabinoid compounds, the more potent your final product will be.

You should also ensure that you have all the supplies you’ll need for the preparation process. Though these will vary depending on your preparation method, there are certain universal supplies required for almost all CBD oil recipes. They include:

  • A slow-burning cooker
  • A double boiler (You can employ a makeshift model)
  • Glass bowl
  • A fine strainer
  • A cheesecloth
  • Non-aromatic kitchen papers, cotton fabric cloth or filter papers
  • A thermometer
  • A container with a lid to store your CBD oil once the preparation process is complete

It is also worth noting that the main step in the preparation process is using just-sufficient heat. The use of excess heat in the preparation process can kill certain cannabinoid compounds making your oil less potent. It also goes without saying that all preparation equipment should be clean in order to guarantee the purity of the final product.

Recipe 1: Making CBD Oil Using Coconut Oil

  • First cut the hemp flowers or cannabis buds into small pieces, then place them on a baking sheet. Place the sheet in an oven preheated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and allow to bake for around 27 minutes. This is the part of the process known as decarboxylation, during which we allow cannabinoid compounds to come to the forefront of your bud or flower.
  • Next, light your heater and place some water at the base of your double boiler. Add 1 cup of coconut oil to the upper level of the boiler, allowing it to melt gently.
  • Once the oil has melted, add around 10 grams of cannabis buds.
  • Continue heating the mixture of coconut oil and your primary ingredient over low heat. for up to one hour, occasionally stirring the mixture. Use the thermometer to ensure that the temperature of the mixture does not exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit
  • After one hour, cover your strainer with a cheesecloth and gently strain the mixture until no oil is left. Remember, be careful: the mixture will be hot.
  • You can then transfer your CBD oil into a storage container and cork the lid strongly.
  • Store your oil in a cool and dark location.

Recipe 2: Making CBD Oil Using Olive Oil

  • First, add your hemp flowers or cannabis buds in a simple pot. Add water to cover the primary ingredient.
  • Next, slowly heat the mixture for around 10 minutes, using your lowest setting.
  • Remove your flowers and put them on a strainer, allowing the water to naturally evaporate.
  • Repeat the three procedures above until the water in the mixture you are heating does not have any color.
  • You should then remove the primary ingredient and re-sieve it (allowing the water to drain naturally). Once that step is complete, place your dried ingredient on a non-scented kitchen paper so that all water is filtered out.
  • Now, place the dry primary ingredient in the upper section of a double boiler, then add olive oil to cover.
  • Add water to the lower part of your double boiler.
  • Heat the double boiler for a few hours, keeping the mixture’s temperature at a steady 100 degrees Celsius
  • After around 3 hours, remove the mixture from the fire and strain the oil using a cheesecloth
  • Store your CBD oil in a cool and dark place.

So there you have it: two simple recipes for preparing your own CBD oil. All from the comfort of your own home. It is challenging to create our formulation, and why you should experiment with CBD until you find what you prefer. It takes time, and you should enjoy your CBD discovery.

How Should CBD Oil Be Consumed?

Homemade CBD oil doesn’t have a very long shelf life, so it should be consumed within a year. Remember that shelf life will decrease if you don’t store the CBD oil properly.

Ideally, you should consume CBD oil in its raw state. When you use it for cooking, the heat will end up killing the oil’s cannabinoids. Still, to get the full benefits of this oil, you can use it to dress your salads or titrate with tincture under your tongue. And, at the right temperatures, you can also use CBD oil to create various baked CBD edibles.

Not interested in consuming your CBD oil? Try applying cannabis oil topically to relieve your muscle aches! You can also add CBD oil to creams or other lotions for added benefits.

What Dosage Should You Take?

It is very hard to point out the exact dosage of homemade CBD oil that you should consume. This is because the potency of each batch varies depending on the purity of your preparation process, as well as the concentration of cannabinoids in the primary ingredient used. You can send your CBD out for testing, but that can be expensive for the hobby hemp farmer.

Ideally, you should start by taking low doses to gauge the potency and effects of your oil. Your body will tell you the most ideal dosage of CBD oil to consume. And if you’re not getting the results you’d expect from your homemade cannabidiol oil? Consider purchasing store-bought, full-spectrum CBD oil. In this way, you’ll know the exact potency of your CBD oil, and have greater success when figuring out the right dose for your body. We include a suggested use table as an insert inside all of our Tanasi hemp extract products. Be consistent, and be patient as it can take time to recognize what your body is saying, and with some people, it can be immediate. We love to hear the stories from our customer reviews, and if you feel so inclined to tell us what you think about our Tanasi products and why you choose to use them.
