5 Tips to Reduce Anxiety While Keeping Your (Social) Distance

There are so many reasons why we experience anxiety. Sometimes, it’s rooted in external factors (cough, cough…Coronavirus, we’re looking at you). And sometimes, internal mental health triggers are to blame. Either way, anxiety can be detrimental to your health. Thankfully, there are many ways we can reduce stress and manage our anxiety—starting with these five anxiety tips.

1. Get some Exercise. Regularly.

Moving is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. Of course, if your gym is closed, or you’re distanced from your running buddy, this won’t be easy. But never fear, you can still get active to reduce stress. If the weather’s rough, try an online workout video – a quick YouTube search should yield fast and fierce results.  But if the weather’s nice, get outside. Walking and jogging are great stress relievers.

Why? Anxiety tip: making the same moves, over and over, combines physical activity with near-meditative movements. So you get two-pronged stress relief: physical activity combats stress hormones like cortisol while releasing feel-good endorphin chemicals throughout the body. And the meditative quality of your movements banishes racing thoughts to keep you in the moment fighting anxiety and reducing your stress. Plus, if you’re regular with physical activity, your sleep quality may improve. Which brings us to our next point…

2. Prioritize Sleep. Now, More than Ever.

To function properly and cope with anxiety, grown humans need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Getting less will make you even more agitated. And less capable of coping with stress. To improve your sleep, follow a few rules. Go to bed and wake up at the same time, every day even on the weekends. (Although you wouldn’t be wrong to sleep in a bit now that your commute has been reduced to hitting the couch.) Avoid screens — TVs, phones, and even Kindles — at least an hour before bed. And, if you find it difficult to fall asleep, get out of bed and seek a calming activity, like reading a book, in another room. Only return to your bedroom when you feel tired and ready for sleep.

3. Write Your Heart Out.

Looking for ways to fill that calm hour before your newly-established bedtime? Consider journaling, which is another excellent anxiety tip for reducing stress and worry. If your mind is racing with concerns about global pandemics, try this technique: write out all those worries and negative thoughts in your journal pages. Keep going until you can’t think of any more. Then, rip out that page and toss it, tear it or even burn it (if you can do so safely.) Once the disposal is done, focus on new, positive thoughts and write those down instead. Then, whenever you experience anxiety, read those positive thoughts. You can even say them out loud if it helps. The point is to focus on staying positive in order to reduce your stress. Especially when you’re having a tough moment.

4. Get a Vocal Workout.

Of course, if you’re less a writer and more a talker, try singing to reduce your anxiety. Studies show that singing can boost your body’s endorphins while lowering your anxiety levels and reducing stress. In fact, this study found that after one hour of singing, anxiety and depression levels were way down for the participating singers. Quarantine karaoke, anyone?

5. Embrace a Regular Supplement.

Last, but certainly not least, on our list of anxiety tips is to try stress-busting supplements. First, try B-complex vitamins: studies show that B vitamins alleviate anxiety, in part by balancing your blood sugar and supporting your adrenal glands (they can reduce stress and anxiety levels.) You can also try lemon balm, a relative of mint plants that can make you calmer with just a single dose. And, studies suggest, adding lemon balm to your beverage can further reduce your anxiety. Finally, check out Tanasi’s range of CBD products. From CBD tinctures to topicals like our 150 mg hemp-extract salve and water-soluble drink concentrates, hemp-extract products like Tanasi’s are linked to these findings with strong potential for anxiety relief.

Bonus: since Tanasi is an online-CBD store, you can make your purchase on your couch and get your order in just a few days. Now, that’s a real social distance win!
